We are in Mrs. Kuffel's class and we are learning about nutrition. There are five food groups.  The groups are called Protein, Vegetable, Fruit, Dairy, and Grains. We need to know these food groups so we can eat healthy and get stronger.

You are supposed to eat from all five food groups every day. The protein food group is foods like eggs, meats, nuts, and seeds. You should be eating protein the size of a school milk carton. The vegetable food group includes carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, peppers, celery, cauliflower, peanut butter and mushrooms. The fruit food group includes bananas, strawberries, oranges, green grapes, purple grapes, watermelon, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, green apples, olives, red apples, yellow apples, peaches, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, mangoes, lemons, and honeydew.  The dairy food group includes foods like milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, and ice cream. The last food group is grains and that includes food like bread, noodles, pretzels, cereal, crackers, pancakes, muffins, rice, and bagels.

We learned about My Plate. Half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables. The other half should be filled with grains and protein. On the side, you should have your dairy. We use this plate to help us remember what we should have each day. It reminds us which foods help us get stronger.

When we eat school lunch, they do a good job using My Plate. For example, we get pears from the fruit group. We get corn dogs from the grain and the protein group.  We get carrots from the vegetable group. Last, we get milk and that is from the dairy group. So we get all the stuff that we need.

You should try to use My Plate at home. We hope you liked learning about our nutrition unit. If you want to learn more, go to MyPlate.gov.
