Be The Boss of Your Reading

In Ms. Van Eperen's class we sing a song called, "Be The Boss of Your Reading." At the first sign of trouble in our reading, we stop and we try something. We sing this song because it helps us figure out words with our tools. Some of our tools are a magnifying glass, a light, and sticky notes in our Detective Bag. We use the magnifying glass to help us see tricky words closer up. We use the blue light to split the words up.  Sticky notes help us put notes to go back to with our reading partner. Sometimes we write words that are tricky on the sticky notes so our partner can help us with the word. When we have partner reading, we read on our own first and then we can meet in the partner reading spot. We read together with one book from our book bin that holds our books.

The tools help us solve tricky words because if we can't solve them we are just going to feel like skipping them. The song reminds us to use our tools. That's why we do the song!

Lyrics to “Be a Reading Boss!”

Sung to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

If you think something’s wrong, you’ve got to STOP! (clap, clap!) If you think something’s wrong, you’ve got to STOP! (clap, clap!) If you think something’s wrong, and you say, “What’s going on?!” If you think something’s wrong, you’ve got to STOP! (clap, clap!) Then you try something else, and don’t give up! Then you try something else, and don’t give up! Then you try and you try, and you say, “This job is mine!” Then you try something else, and don’t give up! When you think you’ve got it right, check it out! When you think you’ve got it right, check it out! When you think you’ve got it right, triple-check with all your might...Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right? When you think you’ve got it right, check it out! Be the boss of your reading, be the boss! Be the boss of your reading, be the boss! When the job gets really tough, And you want to huff and puff (cross arms and sigh) Be the boss of your reading, be the boss!
