First Grade Matters

First Graders learning about matter.

During the month of February, first grade students were digging deep into understanding and working with the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.

During the month of February, first grade students were digging deep into understanding and working with the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.  Once or twice a week we rotated groups throughout the first grade hallway and explored changing states of matter.  We utilized the Scientific Method for each experiment. In the end, the students conducted six different experiments: root beer floats, changing play-doh, balloon explosion, kinetic sand, slime, and dancing raisins. We finished with a field trip to Building for Kids (Children's Museum) in Appleton.  The students enjoyed a Matter learning experience at the museum as well.  The students learned that matter is all around us and it can be changed in a variety of ways.
